Warped Tour 2004
July 1st,2nd
Written by: Lori Silberman

So...ready for another example of pure, innocent LUCK? RoseMary and I decided to go to Vans
Warped Tour on 7/1 and 7/2 at Cal State Fullerton. Out of the 50 bands or so there, we only really
wanted to see a few, but we had trust in our powers that our time could be filled in other ways
than simply watching the concerts with the “norms.” So when we got there, before we even
entered the concert, we made our way to look for a backstage entrance. As neither of us had ever
been to CSF for a concert before everything was unknown and had to be guessed. So we
continued to walk down the beaten path towards a gate that we guessed was a way to get
backstage. Luckily the guards at the gate were preoccupied at the moment because they were
reprimanding some other scoundrels that were trying to sneak past so we were able to slip into
the fence with ease. Getting past the fence turned out to be the hard part! We were in the street
next to the backstage entrance and some guy saw that we were attempting to find a way in and
showed us an opening in the fence. Luckily, we just slipped in and VOILA: backstage! We stayed
there for awhile…riding on bikes…and it got so hot and tiring that we sat down at a random tent.
By then the opening in the fence was guarded and we knew that if the guards caught us backstage
without passes we could get kicked out of the concert all together so we were stuck. So we sat
down at a random tent that was empty at the time and one by one random people came to the tent
and sat down on the chairs next to us.  There we began to talk to some skaters such as the
extremely kind Anthony Furlong (whose photo is upside down in the Warped Tour Magazine).
After awhile they started to feel sorry for us and our sob story and he aided in giving us backstage
sticky passes. Now being a full-fledged VIP we were able to move around with ease. We went in
and out of the concert, going behind the stage and meeting all sorts of people, including Juliette
Lewis from Starsky and Hutch and from “I Love the 80s” and Eric Melvin from NOFX (whom we
saw countless times walking around but never did catch his bandmates) . We were also lucky
enough to be able to be one of the lucky few to watch Bad Religion front and center from the
stage, right next to the drums. Very cool. After the show was over we stayed for the BBQs and
after show parties while awkwardly walking around pretending we belonged running into famous
people in between. The next day was just as lucky-after climbing over a fence which left much
blood-shed of RoseMary’s toe we were back with the tour buses, we used yesterday’s passes
which didn’t always work. We walked behind the main stages to get onstage for NOFX, but this
really fat security manager left us traumatized in peril as he ripped off RoseMary’s old pass and
Lori went running. He told her to get out but of course she just went and hid behind a box full of
equipment. RoseMary spotted Sheep Mafia buddy Fletcher from Pennywise (whom she had met
at Weenie Roast) and who turned out to be one of the nicest men ever! We told him our tragic
story and he heroically asked his buddy to give us passes and so once again we were not just one
of the norms. How awesome is he! We met the band of Bad Religion that day, a member of Story
of the Year, a member of NOFX, some other random people, and my all time favorite actress:
Drew Barrymore! We were also lucky enough to watch Bad Religion from the stage once again
with help from the cool Greg Hetson, guitarist of Bad Religion. There are just so many people to
thank for the successful adventure.
But alas…all good things must come to an end….

P.S. If you ever have to use the restroom on a tour bus never flush toilet paper down the toilet.
